| Abstract | The world rapidly evolves into a global community, where work-related challenges in one nation can affect other nations. They require expertise and experience from diverse people to search for solutions. Effective international research collaboration (IRC) is required to enable researchers from different countries to address global problems, explore frontiers of technological knowledge and disseminate research results to advance technology, promote economic development, and enhance national stability. It has become one of the national strategies to narrow technological gaps and boost national productivity and societal development. To effectively plan for IRC enhancement, this study aims to utilize the concept of knowledge management (KM), considering five key KM factors, namely knowledge sharing (KS), knowledge creation (KC), knowledge storage (KT), knowledge retention (KR), and knowledge utilization (KU) to improve IRC systematically. The systematic literature review is conducted to extract these five KM factors (with their 24 associated attributes) to be used to enhance IRC (which is associated by five measures). The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) results confirm the groupings of KM and IRC factors with acceptable internal consistency values. The interrelationships of KM and IRC factors are examined using the structural equation modeling (SEM) method. The results confirm cause-andeffect relationships and reveal directions of relationships between them. It was found that the KU factor has a strong direct relationship with IRC and should be emphasized when planning to enhance IRC in a short term. Focuses could be on organizing a coaching and mentoring program for new staff and initiating an IRC-related career path to motivate staff to seek for more IRC projects. The KT, KC, and KR factors may be considered for mid-term IRC plan, focusing on setting up an IRC task force team to coordinate international-related activities, launching an IRC policy, and having management position to cooperate in IRC-related activities. Management should commit in enhancing IRC by providing adequate budget, improving IT Infrastructure, and being a role model in IRC implementation. Ultimately, the IRC implementation should be integrated as a part of working culture to build a strong network and enhance staff competencies (these are items under the KS factor) to produce efficient IRC results. The study results provide insights into using KM to enhance IRC and achieve sustainable development in the long term. |
