Abstract This study investigated English learning motivation among Thai master’s-level English Language Teaching (ELT) students at a public university in Bangkok. It examined intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, identified dominant motivational factors, and explored strategies for sustaining motivation. A mixed-methods approach was employed with 30 participants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings showed that participants demonstrated very high intrinsic motivation (M = 4.42) and high extrinsic motivation (M = 3.94), with intrinsic motivation being stronger overall. Improving English proficiency to strengthen professional identity was the strongest intrinsic factor, while career advancement and higher future income were the strongest extrinsic factors. Becoming a better English teacher was the dominant motivational factor. The findings suggest that ELT programs should provide practical, learner-centered learning experiences to strengthen students’ professional identity, teaching competence, and long-term English learning motivation.
