Abstract This study examines the similarities and differences in the linguistic features of English narrative writing by Grade 6 students enrolled in an English Program and those in a Thai Program at a demonstration school in Bangkok. It also determines the linguistic features most commonly used in narrative writing by students from both Programs. There have been various studies on English writing of Thai EFL students, however; there has been limited research on a comparative analysis on linguistic features in EFL narrative writing. Three linguistic features are highlighted in this paper: lexical, syntactic, and discourse. 49 participants were chosen by convenience sampling. Each participant produced five narrative texts about 100 words long. Data was gathered by a narrative worksheet for writing samples; AntConc to tabulate lexical density and diversity; and Coh-Metrix to calculate syntactic complexity, coherence, and lexical cohesion. The results showed that English Program students wrote more syntactically complex sentences with denser information, possibly due to greater English exposure in their classes. Thai Program students demonstrated better in repetition and semantic continuity. Both groups demonstrated similar difficulty with overall coherence. The results have important implication that different language exposure might contribute to variation in linguistic features in narrative writing and point out the area where extra instructional support is needed.
