| Abstract | This article is a review of Tachtiris' Translation and Race where she critiques the racial hierarchies in the field of translation studies. Tachtiris argues that whiteness shapes translation norms and marginalizes translators of color reinforcing systemic inequities. In her book, she critiques Western-centric frameworks, racial capitalism, and the exclusion of Black translators from key projects, arguing that the only way to achieve justice in the field is by leading a radical transformation of norms, institutions, and power. The book has many strengths including its enriching case studies, in-depth analysis of racial hierarchies, and strong call for radical transformation. However, it has some limitations as well. The limitations can be summarized in three points: its focus on Western-centric contexts, its narrow focus on literary translation, and the absence of practical steps for making the transformation that the author argues for. Despite these gaps, the book is a significant contribution to the field of translation studies with its interdisciplinary approach, offering a comprehensive and critical perspective on race in the field. |
