| Abstract | Coastal areas of Chonburi Province are characterized by different coastal-use types, with distinct spatial and seasonal patterns of marine water quality. This study aimed to assess marine water quality status and its compliance with marine water quality standards, examine the spatial, seasonal, and interannual variations in water quality parameters and the Marine Water Quality Index (MWQI), and analyze the relationships between water quality parameters and MWQI, as well as among the parameters themselves. Three representative coastal-use areas: Chonburi–Ang Sila Bay (aquaculture area), Bangsaen Beach (recreation area), and Wonnapha Beach–Sriracha (community area), were investigated during 2017–2025. Marine water quality data published by the Institute of Marine Science, Burapha University, were evaluated against marine water quality standards. MWQI values were calculated, and relationships were analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation. Chonburi–Ang Sila Bay exhibited the poorest water quality, with several parameters failing to comply with the standards, particularly dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate, and total coliform bacteria, whereas Bangsaen Beach and Wonnapha Beach–Sriracha were generally classified as fair. The lowest MWQI values occurred during the rainy season in all areas. Chonburi–Ang Sila Bay remained in the poor category throughout all seasons, whereas the other two areas were predominantly classified as fair, with no consistent interannual trend. MWQI was positively correlated with dissolved oxygen and pH and negatively correlated with ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, and total coliform bacteria, although the correlation patterns differed among coastal-use types. These findings highlight the influence of coastal-use characteristics on marine water quality and provide baseline information for long-term monitoring and effective coastal water quality management in Chonburi Province, Thailand. |
