Abstract Cassava is an important economic crop in Thailand, and appropriate nutrient management is a key approach to increasing yield and production efficiency. This study aimed to investigate the effects of potassium fertilizer rates on agronomic traits and yield of four cassava varieties/genotypes grown under low-fertility soil conditions. A split-plot in a randomized complete block design was used with three replications. The main plot was three potassium fertilizer rates: 7.5 (control), 17.5, and 27.5 kg K2O/rai, and the subplot was four cassava genotypes: CMR38-125-77, Huay Bong 100, Kasetsart 50, and Rayong 9. The results showed that the cassava varieties responded differently to potassium fertilizer application. CMR38-125-77 and Huai Bong 100 produced the highest storage root fresh weight, storage root dry weight, biomass, and starch yield at a potassium application rate of 17.5 kg K2O/rai, with the highest marginal rate of return (MRR) of 291% and 173%, respectively. Rayong 9 gave the highest yield and economic return at 27.5 kg K2O/rai (MRR = 122%), whereas Kasetsart 50 showed no economic response to potassium fertilization at any of the tested rates (MRR < 100%). In addition, the lowest potassium fertilizer rate resulted in the lowest yield across all varieties, while potassium use efficiency, expressed as partial factor productivity (PFP), tended to decrease with increasing fertilizer rates. These findings suggest that potassium fertilizer management should be optimized according to variety potential in order to maximize production efficiency and economic return under low-fertility soil conditions.
