| Abstract | This research aims to explore the state of knowledge on the representation of mental illnesses in the media. It employs a documentary research method to collect and analyze studies on the representation of mental illnesses in the media, published in both Thai and English, retrieved from the Google Scholar electronic database between 2004 and 2023. A total of 55 selected literature items were analyzed using directed content analysis, organizing the knowledge from the literature according to the study framework. The analysis reveals the state of knowledge on the representation of mental illnesses in the media in three areas: 1) On the communication of mental illness representation: Studies in the past often indicated that the media presents a negative and inaccurate representation of mental illnesses. However, recent studies suggest that characters in entertainment media exhibit symptoms that align with diagnostic criteria for mental disorders, even though the media may exaggeratedly present these. Additionally, another study proposes that presenting positive and accurate information about mental illness may not necessarily lead to a reduction of stigma or improved understanding, as communication still depends on contexts. 2) On the impacts of media content related to mental illness on patients and society: On the one hand, negative impacts include the creation of misconceptions, stigma, blame, and discrimination. On the other hand, positive impacts include the establishment of accurate awareness, leading to the acceptance of patients and the proposal of solutions or policies to address issues. 3) On using media as a tool to create awareness that influences changes in societal attitudes towards mental illness. This includes the development of new media to foster understanding and experiments, and also the usage of existing media, such as Korean dramas, as tools to create awareness that can lead to changes in attitudes. |
