| Abstract | Packaging waste from tourism accommodations exerts significant environmental burdens.Analyzing waste generation patterns and the associated waste flows is essential for identifyingthe dominant waste streams and the factors that influence them. This process provides valuableinsights for developing effective waste management strategies. This study aims to assess thewaste flow and end-of-life environmental impacts of packaging waste generated by tourismaccommodations in five provinces in Northeastern Thailand. A questionnaire survey wasconducted across 35 accommodations to collect packaging waste data, and the environmentalimpacts of end-of-life waste management scenarios were evaluated using Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) in SimaPro with the ReCiPe impact assessment. The results indicate that the totalpackaging waste amount to 891.53 kg per day, with an average of 0.26 kg generated per guestper day. Plastic and glass packaging constitute a significant portion of waste generated bytourist accommodations. Glass bottles, predominantly from the dining area, represent the largestportion of this packaging waste. In terms of waste collection patterns, recycling is the primaryapproach, particularly concerning PET and glass. Under the end-of-life management scenarioevaluated in this study, aluminum packaging waste showed a net Climate Change impact of−17.89 kg CO₂ eq/kg packaging waste, reflecting the environmental benefits of the currentrecycling system. Tourist accommodations should focus on diverting more packaging wastefrom landfills to promote sustainable waste management. This study provides comprehensiveguidelines aimed at establishing concrete targets for packaging waste reduction. |
