Abstract This study measured the overall capability of an active green wall to reduce indoorparticulate matter using a clean air delivery rate (CADR) approach. A 0.33 × 0.33 × 1.40 mrectangular prototype, called an active treatment botanical air cleaning module (BACM),equipped with two centrifugal fans and golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum) of 7.2 m2leaf surface area was built for measuring the effects of air circulation rate through theBACM and air velocity uniformity on its performance. PM2.5 was generated by burningan incense stick to obtain an initial concentration of 0.24-0.25 mg/m3 and fed to a closed28.8 m3 chamber. Only the aerial part of the plants was used to entrap PM2.5. A loss ratefor PM2.5 due to the BACM operation was determined by fitting measured concentrationsto a mass balance model using nonlinear regression. The multiple linear regressionanalysis indicated that air circulation rates influenced the BACM cleaning potentialmore strongly than air flow uniformity, at the 0.05 significance level. Furthermore, theair circulation rates were linearly associated with the PM2.5 reduction rates at the 0.05significance level. The maximum CADR of the BACM operating in the PM2.5 activeapproach was 7.3 m3/h, compared to 3.4 m3/h with no air flow.
