Abstract Daylight in buildings is aesthetically pleasing and energy conserving. The common method of utilizing daylight is to allow its transmission through windows. With such a method, only areas within a few meters of the windows are sufficiently illuminated. This paper aims to show that light pipes can be used to bring daylight for illumination in deep interior spaces and that, in certain configurations, it is economically feasible to do so in Thailand. For a new building, roof-mounted light pipes can be designed to provide daylight to the top floors. If the width of a building is not excessive, fa็ade-mounted light pipes with daylight entry ports on opposite east and west fa็ades could be used. For existing buildings, roof-mounted light pipes, where the pipes are to extend through some top floors, may have limited applications. However, application of fa็ade-mounted pipes may still be feasible. The results presented in this paper show that application of light pipes to commercial buildings is technically and economically feasible.
