| Abstract | This study proposes a framework to simplify data collection from semi-automated machines, supporting digital transformation on manufacturing shop floors in developing countries. Based on a proposed Check-Act-Plan-Do (CAP-Do) improvement cycle using sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT), the framework distinguishes between equipment-related and human-related losses. Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is used as the standard indicator, shifting from traditional unit-based measurements to a time-based approach. With time-based measurement, a detailed classification of losses can be achieved, making it possible to pinpoint specific areas for improvement. Unlike traditional unit-based methods, where human inefficiency may be grouped with machine losses or overlooked entirely, this framework provides a clearer direction for operational progress. To ensure precise data collection, the study also provides guidelines for sensor placement. By selecting suitable locations, only essential data is gathered. This avoids the data overload and complex analysis that often act as implementation barriers in emerging countries. The active and inactive status data from the sensor are then used to calculate the time-based OEE. The originality of this study lies in the proposed integration of sensors and IoT with the CAP-Do cycle framework, which accurately measures the performance of semi-automated machinery and supports the development of effective improvement plans. |
