| Abstract | Objective: The study aimed to study the facilitators and barriers to participation of patients with spinal cord injury living in urban areas.Method: In-depth interview (Semi-structured interview) were conducted with 8 adults with traumatic or non-traumatic spinal cord injury living in the community. Participants have experience in using wheelchairs to go out or do social activities at least once in the past 6 months and able to communicate in Thai.Results: Four themes of facilitator factors for patients with spinal cord injuries to perform home activities and participation are independent living thought, family support, appropriate physical environment and wheelchair, and physical therapy and occupational therapy. Additional 2 themes for participation are support from others and recreation and sport. Three themes of barrier factors for patients with spinal cord injuries to perform home activities and participation are inappropriate physical environment and wheelchair, impairment of body function, and negative attitude/anxiety. Additional 2 themes for participation are the natural environment and inconvenience of public transportation.Conclusion: Physical health, mental health, physical and natural environment, and family and social support are factors affecting participation in patients with spinal cord injury. Therefore, healthcare professionals should consider these factors to minimize barriers and encourage the participation of patients with spinal cord injury.Keywords: Participation, Spinal cord injury, Facilitator, Barrier |
