Abstract | The main objective of this research was to examine the content of Thai music composition according to the knowledge transmission approach of Lieutenant Colonel Sanoh Luangsoontorn (Thailand’s National Artist in Traditional Thai music year 2012). The research used a qualitative methodology, gathering data by an in-depth interview, and data analysis by an inductive interpretation.The content can be divided into four categories as followed i) the foundation of composition, referred to the significance of concepts in composition which brought the learner to understand multi-level of composition from the basic to the advanced. ii) the concerns of relevant knowledge in composition include the ability of reading and writing western notation, as well as basic knowledge in Thai music theory. iii) main concepts and principles included in Thai music composition are the creation of new “look khong” theme; the melodic interpretation within “nathap probkai” rhythmic framework; the formation of fixed melody, the notion of skeleton melody; the process of variation-making; the expansion and diminution of the main theme; the treatment of “thao” and “yon” musical phrase and their important core notes; the application of question-answer and interpose in new composition; the music making method within “nathap songmai" or “thayoy" rhythmic framework; techniques of making “phasa” song in multicultural accents; the modulation and metabole techniques, the methodology of creating the solo piece “thang diew”, and lastly iv) The assessmentof learning Thai music composition that includes threesteps, namely, thepre-test, theformativeandthepost-test assessment. |
