| Abstract | This research has the objective of studying the uses of nouns as personal pronouns in Thai language learning materials designed for foreigners. This research was a qualitative study using the concept of social linguistics. This research collected data from conversations in textbooks during the years 2000-2021 and from conversations in social media as of December 31, 2021, which are media used to learn Thai for foreigners learning using English and Chinese by analyzing content. This research is a content analysis by writing a description and presenting it with tables showing related data. Statistics used in data analysis are frequency and percentage. The research findings reveal a total of 16 distinct pronoun forms used in the materials, which can be categorized into 20 specific grammatical meanings related to person. These include 8 first-person pronouns, 8 second-person pronouns, and 4 third-person pronouns. Among these, 12 pronouns were identified with a one-to-one correspondence of form and meaning, while 4 pronouns had one form with two meanings. Additionally, the study found that the use of Thai pronouns is influenced by social and cultural factors. Social factors include gender, age, the relationship between interlocutors, familiarity, and situational appropriateness. Cultural factors involve considerations of seniority, politeness, respect, honor, affection, and group belonging, among others. |
