Abstract Sophorolipids (SLs)are a type of biosurfactantthatbelong to the glycolipidsgroup and have manyapplicationsin various fields. They have been used to replace chemical surfactantsdue to their higher biodegradability, lower toxicity,and their being moreenvironmentally friendly.However, in order to compete with cheaper chemical surfactants, it is important to use suitable low-cost materials for sophorolipid production.In this study, we produced SLs from Candida bombicola using sugarcane molasses and coconut oil. The results showed that the optimal conditions for SL production were 10% (w/v) sugarcane molassesand10% (v/v) coconutoilat25oCandpH 6 for seven days. The sophorolipidsthat were produced wereresistanttoE. coliNRRL B-409, P. aeruginosaNRRL B-14781, S. aureusNRRL B-313,andB. subtilisNRRL B-354. They also exhibitedfree radical scavengingabilityin a dose-dependent manner (EC50= 0.35 mg/ml)and emulsification activity. These results showed that sugarcane molasses and coconut oil can be used for SL production in order to reducesubstrate costs.
