| Abstract | Sharing something in common withcooperative education, application-oriented universities has been a growing trend in China's higher education development. For application-oriented university presidents, theprimary concern is to determinewhat leadership styles toadopt to face the opportunities and challenges inherent inchangingsituations. Based on the situational leadership theory and the synergistic leadership theory, this research appliesa mixedmethodologyto analyze the leadership styles of application-oriented university'spresidentsand identify the common characteristicsand differencesin theirleadership styles. Two presidents from University S and University Xwere chosen as respondentsasboth of them had experience withapplication-oriented universities from developed areas onthe Southeast coast of China. The investigationrevealsthatthey have adopted aparticipating leadership style and a selling leadership style, respectively. In light of the synergistic leadership theory, it also points tosome similarities and differences in their leadership styles. This research studyprovides important considerations in terms ofthe internal and external factorsofleadership styleadoption. |
