Abstract This study aims to investigate the effect of the addition of the iron-loaded biomass pyrolysate (Fe-biochar) on the steam gasification of Indonesian Adaro sub-bituminous coal. The amount of hydrogen evolved from the steam gasification of the mixture of Fe-biochar and Adaro coal at 800?C for 60 min was much higher than that from the steam gasification of iron-loaded Adaro coal. From the result that the specific reaction rate did not decrease during the steam gasification of the mixture of Fe-biochar and Adaro coal, the iron catalyst on the biochar was found to be relatively stable in the steam gasification. The activity of iron catalyst was discussed by the differences in the chemical form and the crystallite size of iron catalyst.
