| Abstract | Alkali activation presents a prospective possibility for the reuse of waste brick powder, though it should be noted that ceramic materials were a subject of alkali activation only rarely to date, probably due to the technological difficulties accompanying the preparation process. In this case the binder can be prepared while avoiding the Portland cement entirely. Therefore, the environmental benefits are even more remarkable than if the brick powder is used as a supplementary cementing material replacing only a part of cement. In this paper, several geopolymer mixes are designed, using waste brick powder as the main component and a combination of water glass and sodium hydroxide as alkali activator. At first, the hardened mixes are subject of detailed material characterization experiments, including microstructural studies using scanning electron microscopy, textural studies by mercury intrusion porosimetry, and qualitative and quantitative X-ray diffraction analyses. Then, their functional properties are assessed by the measurement of basic physical properties and mechanical parameters. Experimental results show satisfactory performance of all analyzed mixes which makes good prerequisites for their practical application as an environmental friendly alternative to cement-based materials. |
